The Current MDI Industrial Hygiene Data on Spray Foam

چکیده

Spray application of polyurethane foam for thermal insulation of buildings represents the polyurethane application with the highest potential worker exposure to MDI. This paper reviews the existing work done to characterize the MDI exposures of the sprayed polyurethane foam workers as well as identifying several elements of an effective industrial hygiene program suggested by the existing work. In addition, areas for additional possible work are suggested. The existing work shows clearly that MDI exposures for both the sprayed foam applicator and helper can exceed both task and shift occupational exposure limits. Additional feasible engineering controls are not obvious, so control schemes based on administrative controls (work practices, establishment of “work zones” and re-entry clearance times) and personal protective equipment (respirators, gloves, and protective clothing) are necessary. Suggestions for more work in the areas of establishing re-entry clearance times and work zones as well as characterizing amine catalyst exposures are made.

Center for the Polyurethanes Industry summary of unpublished industrial hygiene studies related to the evaluation of emissions of spray polyurethane foam insulation.

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation is used as thermal insulation for residential and commercial buildings. It has many advantages over other forms insulation; however, concerns have been raised related to chemical emissions during and after application. The American Chemistry Council's (ACC's) Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) has gathered previously unpublished industrial hygie...

Preliminary report of the discovery of a new pharmaceutical granulation process using foamed aqueous binders.

Spray granulation is commonly used to improve the flow of drug formulation powders by adding liquid binders. We have discovered a new granulation process whereby liquid binders are added as aqueous foam. Initial experiments indicate that foam granulations require less binder than spray granulations, less water is added to the powder mass, rates of addition of foam can be greater than rates of a...

Isocyanate exposure in an autobody repair and collision center.

T his inspection by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports on an overexposure to methylene bisphenyl isocyanate (MDI) during the spray application of a protective coating for truck beds. The inspection was conducted at an autobody repair shop and collision center that also operated a spray-on truck bed coating operation. The investigation was initiated as a complaint i...

Introduction: methyl diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) is one of the most commonly iisocyanate used in the foam manufacturing companies. The aim of this study is to evaluat iisocyanate (MDI) effects on the pulmonary capacities of workers by examining the results of workers spirometers in foam. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Sampling was conducted through census company method. In order ...

Cancer incidence and mortality in the Swedish polyurethane foam manufacturing industry.

Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and methylene diphenyldiisocyanate (MDI) are used in large quantities in the polyurethane foam manufacturing industry. Both substances are mutagenic and at least TDI is carcinogenic to animals, but the occupational hazard with respect to cancer is not known. Cancer incidence and mortality patterns were therefore investigated in a cohort of 4154 workers from nine Swedi...
